My Doctor Said I Should Not Lie Down After Taking My Medicine: This Is likely theReason

Have you ever wondered why your mom, dad and family doctor keeps advising you on not to lie down after swallowing a tablet, capsule or any other medicine that has to pass through your mouth?

At a certain period in time, you have been placed on medications for one reason or another. Maybe during a bout of a hard pounding headache, malaria or any common illness.

Every advice given to you by your physician should be taken seriously. Having a basic understanding of how medicines work in the body will be of great help to you.

Researchers have been able to summarize the procedures in which a medicine taken into the body follows. These steps includes: Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion. They are abbreviated as ADME for convenience.

Absorption: how medicines get into your body is covered by absorption. The choice of how certain medicines are to be administered depends on factors like Convenience, Desired rapidity and duration of action, Availability of sterile preparations, Medicine's solubility, Absorption characteristics of the medicine and Onset of action.

The most widely use means of medicine administration is oral ingestion (through the mouth). Other routes include

  1. Injection which could be intravenous (direct injection into the veins), subcutaneous (injection beneath the skin), Intramuscular (direct injection into a muscle), Intra-arterial (direct injection into an artery), Intrathecal -direct injection into the spinal subarachnoid space (membrane covering the brain and spinal cord) and Intraperitoneal (direct injection into the peritoneal cavity).
  2. Topical application by rubbing on the skin or affected area.
  3. Sublingual administration (oral mucosa)
  4. Absorption from the oral mucosa (under the tongue)
  5. Rectal administration and pulmonary administration.

Distribution: once the absorption is accomplished, the medicine now has to be transported through the bloodstream to where it can take action

Metabolism: just like the food you take into the body, the medicine also has to be metabolized normally at the liver. Every substance carried in the bloodstream has to pass through the liver where detoxification and breakdown occurs.

Excretion: when the medicines have fully achieved its goal, it’s now ready to leave the body system.

Being conversant with the ways medicines work in the body, we can now proceed to find out the reason while you shouldn't lie down after swallowing a tablet.

Let’s use a simple analogy. Imagine that you filled up two bottles connected to a pipe with water, you then placed one of the bottles horizontally while the other one is placed vertically downward. The observation will be that the bottle placed horizontally will likely pour out less water whereas, the other bottle placed vertically downwards will pour out much water.

This same analogy can be applied to the flow or movement of medicines down the oesophagus. When you lie down after swallowing a tablet, the rate at which the medicine moves down the oesophagus will be slowed down because of the less influence of gravity.

The slow movement of the medicine down the oesophagus also implies that the time at which the medicine could have taken to reach the action site will be increased and this will also mean that the actual time it could have taken for the medicine to metabolize and lash out its effect will also be increased.

This might make you think that the medicine is not working which isn’t true.

There is also a possibility that the tablet might stick to the sides of the oesophagus which is dangerous for certain medicines with adverse affects that are prone to the gullet area. In such a situation in which the tablet sticks to the side of the oesophagus, there might be some irritation depending on the tablet you took and possibly nausea (the feeling of throwing up) and if you get to throw up, you waste that particular medicine.

How to Quit Masturbation With Ease

human body

If you are worried as to if masturbation is harmful or not; well, we will help point out that it has no harmful effect when kept at a minimal level but when it gets excess, you may likely have the need of putting the act away for good.

Some people complain of muscle and body weaknesses, pains on private parts and some cases of raised blood pressure, you shouldn’t forget that people are made differently with different ways in which their body responds to certain conditions.

What may be a side effect to Mr. A may not be a side effect to Mr. B but in order to play safe and enjoy whatever life has in stock for use, we must try our best to avoid doing things which we feel isn’t right within us.

Masturbation can be very addictive and might get to a point in which you have to put it into play every day. You shouldn’t feel guilty about this too much so that you won’t end up doing crazy stuffs to yourself (like attempting suicide).

What you should bear in mind is that there are millions of people out there who are also stuck in this awkward situation and what you have to do right now is get out of it before the millions of others do. You must fight hard to win in this battle and you shouldn’t give guilt and self pity a chance to defeat you.

All teenage boys are soon aware of certain sex problems that never seemed to exist in their early childhood. This is also true of girls but usually to a lesser degree. The rapidly growing sex organs are easily stimulated, often to the embarrassment of the young person.

Unless the young person is careful, harmful habits may be formed that may plague him or her to the end of his or her days. The act of self-stimulation, known as masturbation, is often a real problem to the young person and always raises the question of what can be done about it.

These secret acts of self excitement can be definitely harmful especially when carried to excess like we said earlier. Often, the individual tends to become secretive, living in a kind of dream world where fantasy plays a dominant part.

Many highly nervous older women freely admit that most of their troubles stem from some form of self-stimulation, indulged over long periods of time. Among teenagers, nervous problems are always more common in those who indulge in this sort of thing.

Many of them seem unable to face reality. Frequent masturbation, with its tendency to day dreaming, can be harmful, particularly to those who are subject to nervous depression. Young people who want to enjoy life should desist from all such practices. With the help of this article; you will learn how to desist with ease.

We should also point out, however, that an occasional emission of seminal fluid during sleep is not unusual in any young man. There is no reason for you to feel anxious and guilty about this, for it is just another evidence that you are growing up.

Unfortunately, many a boy has been almost frightened out of his wits by hearing tall tales or what is better described as myths about the supposed dangers of this perfectly normal function. This is not fair. Such stories are often invented by people who have quack medicines to sell.

With proper training, any sensible young man will soon realize that these occasional nightly episodes are not dangerous. You should build up your body with vigorous exercises and fill your mind with wholesome thoughts instead of worrying too much about these things.

If you do this, you will soon find all these distressing thoughts taking second place as you train yourself for a successful place in the world.

Fine then, let’s begin the journey to putting an end to your masturbation habit.

Steps to Quit Masturbation

1. Detect the triggers to your masturbation habit

It is always easier to tackle a problem from the root. So let’s begin by finding the trigger to your masturbation. Some people find out that certain life occurrences, scenes or objects seems to trigger their cravings or urge for a round of masturbation.

Most of these triggers may include:

  • Watching porn videos, images and reading sex stories
  • Experiencing sex scenes in movies
  • Listening to discussions on a topic related to sex
  • Staying in a house where such masturbation apparatuses are available
  • Women etc.

So, try to figure out those episodes in your life which triggers the urge to masturbate and then take note of them. Now that you’ve been able to detect your triggers, we can then proceed to see how we can avoid them.

See: How to quit smoking cigarette

2. Avoid your triggers

Whatever seems to boost your cravings for masturbation should be avoided. The big question now is “How?” The major trigger to masturbation among young people or adults happens to be Porn videos. These may be because it is easily available with millions of websites updating them daily.

You also know that with a little internet connection, you can get them downloaded into your PC or mobile phone within seconds. So, how do we deal with this? You can’t stop using your mobile phone because of masturbation and you certainly can’t do away with your PC because of it either. So we are in a kind of situation appropriately called “dilemma” right now.

Certain ways of doing away with porn videos may include installing porn or adult contents blocking software which are available in major software sites. You may also try avoiding visiting websites that display banners of naked men and women but the greatest of all means of putting an end to it is by making the decision of not accessing them again.

In doing this, you now know that there are certain sites you shouldn’t visit, images you shouldn’t view and movies you shouldn’t watch. Also, try as much not to sit yourself in a place where such topics are being discussed. This kind of discussions happens mostly with friends.

3. Try not to be alone for long

talk to a friend

You are likely going to masturbate if you are staying alone at home and maybe you are probably watching a movie with a trigger in it. Once you get to that point and you realize that you are home alone; something within you might say “we are good to go” and once that happens, you are likely going to fall short.

To be safe and to also accomplish our goal, you mustn’t be alone for long. Try visiting friends.

4. Get distracted

From point #3, you can agree that not being alone only suggested that you should get yourself distracted. Getting distracted does not have to be hard; you can learn new sports like basketball, football, tennis, swimming and lots of other fun-filled activities.

You can also try indoor games like ludo, card games, video games or talent shows like singing, dancing, acting and other things you like. You can bring creativity into play by trying some paintings; clothe designs, toy carvings, graphics designs, reading and others. Go out with friends and visit places of interest.

5. Bypassing the night is my greatest challenge in this course

To those who have problems getting over the craving that comes in the night, you can try few options like taking a cool bath or taking rounds of press-ups (push ups or other exercises) until you are too tired to continue. Once you are very tired, it is very easy to sleep off.

You can then roll unto your bed, close your eyes and get to the dreamland. Voila!

6. Get enough exercises

No money for gym no problem. The gym is not the only place for you to exercise. You can actually turn your bedroom into your gym, your surroundings and even the street. Wake up early, get your sport shoes unto your feet, get your sport wears unto your body, pick up your mobile phone with your ear phone connected to it, play your favourite song and step into the street to start jogging.

Believe me when I say this, with your favourite song playing alongside the early morning coolness, you can run miles without realizing it. Gym shouldn’t be a problem okay? Try other exercises like weight lifting, pushups, even yoga and watch the energy in you flow from within thereby giving you an attribute of robustness.

7. Eat well

Masturbation requires energy and the energy in your body comes mostly from food. Never skip meals, try to eat appropriately.

8. Eat Plenty Fruits

eat fruits

You won’t believe the amazing health benefits accompanying certain fruits. Bananas, apples, mangoes, cucumbers, watermelons and many other fruits are good for the body; they fill you with energy, put you in a good mood and protect you from diseases.

Eat as much fruits as possible; you can make it more exciting by preparing some homemade juices and recipes from them.

9. Talk to someone you trust or forget it

There is a cliché which says “a problem shared is a problem solved” but sometimes, this may not be true since some people whom you share your problems with might turn out to aggravate things thereby making your situation more harder.

You can talk to someone you trust about your masturbation issue, aptly, you can try a doctor. He may have had an experience with other patients too, this way, he can give you advice and tips which will help strengthen your resolve not to masturbate anymore. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing it, then forget it and move on-no one can force you alright?

10. Enlighten others and develop hatred towards masturbation

enlighten others

It will help you very much if you train your mind to hate masturbation. Think of it as this scary eight horned devil with a long tail who is trying to steal your right to happiness from you.

Once you are able to hate masturbation, other tips may not be necessary again because you won’t do what you hate. Also, try enlightening other people about it, make yourself the expert in this issue and see how helpful it will be.

One benefit of the enlightenment is that as you get to talk to others about it and exchange opinions, you will learn new things and strategies which you can apply to yourself to help concrete your own decision of not masturbating anymore.

Conclusively, you might want to consider being a little more religious, pray and seek divine help from above. Follow the steps given above and watch how everything in your life begins to fall into their rightful places.

The Monkey Made Banana His Favourite Fruit for a Reason: 20 Shocking Health Benefits of Bananas

health benefits of banana

Monkeys are smart enough to make this nutritious and yummy fruit called banana their favourite. Monkeys were known to be associated with bananas but now, humans who are aware of its priceless health benefits are now tapping into harnessing them.

Banana is a very popular fruit which is cultivated worldwide. The banana export statistics shows that 26.5% of total banana exports as at 2015 went to Ecuador which was worth US$2.8 billion, followed by Belgium with a value worth of $958.1 million. That is exactly how useful banana is.

Banana is one of the oldest cultivated plants. All parts of the banana plant have medicinal applications: the flowers in bronchitis and dysentery and on ulcers; cooked flowers are given to diabetics; the astringent plant sap in cases of hysteria, epilepsy, leprosy, fevers, hemorrhages, acute dysentery and diarrhea, and it is applied on hemorrhoids, insect and other stings and bites.

Young leaves are placed as poultices on burns and other skin afflictions; the astringent ashes of the unripe peel and of the leaves are taken in dysentery and diarrhea and used for treating malignant ulcers; the roots are administered in digestive disorders, dysentery and other ailments; banana seed mucilage is given in cases of diarrhea.

Antifungal and antibiotic principles are found in the peel and pulp of fully ripe bananas. The antibiotic acts against Mycobacteria. A fungicide in the peel and pulp of green fruits is active against a fungus disease of tomato plants. Norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin are also present in the ripe peel and pulp.

The first two elevate blood pressure; serotonin inhibits gastric secretion and stimulates the smooth muscle of the intestines.

Health benefits of bananas

1. Excellent Source of Vitamins and Carotenoids

Banana is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It is naturally rich in vitamin A which aids in healthy teeth, bones, soft tissue, good and healthy eye sight; vitamin B6 known for its ability to aid the body's immune system, promote brain and heart health etc; Vitamin C for effective natural healing, growth of tissue and ligaments etc and vitamin D which also helps the body to absorb calcium.

A study carried out by Marisa Wall (2005) showed that in ripe bananas, the major carotenoids were lutein, αcarotene, and β-carotene. It also stated that bananas contained higher concentrations of lutein than the provitamin A pigments. Lutein has antioxidant activity and has been associated with a decreased risk of macular degeneration.

2. Astonishingly Rich in Potassium

A single banana provides you with 23% of the potassium that you require on daily basis. Potassium benefits the muscles as it helps them to maintain their proper working conditions, preventing muscle spasms at the other end.

Furthermore, recent studies are showing that potassium can help in the decrease of blood pressure in individuals who are potassium deficient. It also goes a long way in reducing the risk of stroke. The potassium in banana is also beneficial for your kidneys and bones.

A good potassium intake suppresses calcium excretion in the urine that can lead to painful kidney stones. This suppression of calcium loss also reduces your risk of developing osteoporosis and brittle bones (healthambition)

3. Reduced Risk of High Blood Pressure

As discussed above, banana is one of the best sources of potassium which is an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. A medium-sized banana provides 350 mg of potassium. The effectiveness of potassium-rich foods in lowering blood pressure has been demonstrated by a number of studies.

The US Food and Drug Administration have allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. According to the FDA, “Diets containing foods that are good sources of potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.” Also worth noting, is the fact that potassium helps your body maintain normal fluid and electrolyte balances in the cells.

4. Reduced Risk of Stroke

Scientists suggested that people with low amount of potassium in their diet may have an increased risk of stroke. A study of 5,600 people aged over 65 found that those with the lowest intake of the potassium were 50% more likely to suffer a stroke.

High-potassium foods, like bananas, may lower the risk of stroke though we still need more research and studies to confirm whether increasing potassium in the diet can actually prevent strokes.

5. Aids Normal Bowel Activity, Prevents Constipation and Diarrhea

A research published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences underscores just how much bananas can improve nutrient absorption. In this study, 57 babies (5-12 months) with persistent diarrhea of at least 14 days duration were given a week’s treatment with a rice-based diet containing either green banana, apple pectin or the rice diet alone.

Treatment with both green banana and apple pectin resulted in a 50% reduction in stool weights, indicating that the babies were absorbing significantly more nutrients.

The fact that banana is rich in non digestible fibres like cellulose, hemicellulose, and alphaglucans which is what is needed in diets for a normal bowel activity with the potential of reducing the risk of constipation and diarrhea. Bananas normalize the colon’s function to absorb large amounts of water for regular bowel movements.

The bowel restoring ability of bananas is due to their richness in pectin, which is water-absorbent. Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound called a prebiotic because it nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon.

These beneficial bacteria produce vitamins and digestive enzymes which improve our ability to absorb nutrients and compounds that protect us against unfriendly microorganisms. When fructooligosaccharides are fermented by these friendly bacteria, not only do numbers of probiotic bacteria increase, but so does the body’s ability to absorb calcium.

6. Reduced Risk of Ulcer and a Home Remedy for Heartburn

Bananas have long been recognized for their antacid effects which protects against stomach ulcers and ulcer damage. A flavonoid in the banana, leucocyanidin, has been found to significantly increase the thickness of the mucous membrane layer of the stomach.

Since bananas help to neutralize acidity, they are also a great way to get rid of heartburn. In an animal study, a simple mixture of banana and milk significantly suppressed acid secretion.

7. Protection against Neurodegenerative Diseases (Alzheimer’s disease)

Researchers at Cornell University investigated the effects of apple, banana, and orange extracts on neuron cells and found that the phenolic phytochemicals of the fruits prevented neurotoxicity on the cells.

Among the three fruits, apples contained the highest content of protective antioxidants, followed by bananas then oranges. These results suggest that fresh apples, banana, and orange in our daily diet along with other fruits may protect neuron cells against oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity and may play an important role in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

8. Good for your Baby

Bananas are the best solid food to introduce to infants. A mashed ripe banana is an extremely simple and healthy baby food which is rich in Potassium, Fibre, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Selenium, Iron, Vitamins A, B2, B6, C, E, Niacin, Folate, and Pantothenic Acid.

Furthermore, bananas are very easy to digest and rarely cause allergic reactions. Bananas are part of the BRAT diet, a diet many physicians recommend for children recovering from gastrointestinal problems, particularly diarrhea.

Recent study found evidence that a higher consumption of bananas and apple juice from concentrate may protect against wheezing in children.

9. An Amazing Cholesterol-Lowering Effect

Animal studies have shown that banana has the potential to lower cholesterol. It was suggested that the dietary fibre component in banana pulp was responsible for its cholesterol-lowering effect. The amount of dietary fibre in banana is relatively constant during banana ripening.

10. Prevents Kidney Diseases

Bananas promote an overall improvement of the functional efficiency of kidneys. Benefits to the kidneys are again due to the high potassium content of bananas. A normal intake of potassium suppresses calcium excretion in the urine and minimizes the risk of kidney stones.

The results of the Swedish population based prospective study (13.4 years) of 61,000 women aged 40-76, show that women eating more than 75 servings of fruits and vegetables per month (which translates into 2.5 per day) cut their risk of kidney cancer 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective.

Women eating bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit.

11. A Fast Cure for Hang-Over

One of the fastest ways to cure hang-over is to make a dairy banana cocktail with milk and honey. Bananas are known to calm an upset stomach and help rehydrate your body. Bananas are rich in the important electrolytes, magnesium and potassium, which are severely depleted during heavy drinking.

Banana with the honey builds up the depleted blood sugar levels, providing some energy.

12. An Excellent Energy Booster

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fibre. Potassium is also essential for helping muscles to contract properly during exercise and reduces cramping up. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout.

13. Great Immunity Booster

Bananas contain 25 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin B6, necessary for producing antibodies and red blood cells as well as aiding in the metabolism of fat. In addition, vitamin B6 serves as an immunity booster.

So, this fruit strengthens your armor against infectious diseases. With each average sized banana, you ingest about 15% of the RDA for vitamin C, one of the strongest antioxidants.

14. Improves Mood and Fights Depression

According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

15. Powers the Brain

200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium- packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

16. Home Remedy for Mosquito Bites

Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

17. PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

18. Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

19. Good for Acne and Warts

Banana peels can be used as a home remedy for acne and warts. Its application is simple, use the inside of a freshly peeled banana fruit to rub on the affected areas. This is awesome if done at bedtime.

20. Calms Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

If You Hate Apples, Then You Miss A Lot: 10 Shocking Health Benefits of Apples

Apple as a very yummy fruit is blessed with lots of health benefits and for this very reason; it is cultivated worldwide all over the planet earth. You shouldn’t be surprised if we decided to include an apple in our logo; it is obviously my best fruit and the fact that it has great health benefits makes me love it more.

There has been an increasing appreciation and understanding of the link between dietary fruit, vegetable intake and improved health in humans. The widespread and growing intake of apples, apple juice/products and their rich phytochemical profile suggest their important potential to affect the health of the populations consuming them.

According to the FAOSTAT of December 2012 which was accessed in 2014, the total world production of apples for 2012 was 76,378,700 tons with china recording the highest production rate of 37,001,601 tons followed by USA, turkey, Poland, India with Philippines recording a gross production of 25 tons.

Due to the unfavourable weather condition in Nigeria, we are not able to produce the certain apples like the green apples, though there are some farms growing the native apple found around here in Nigeria. We might not be able to grow the apples but that doesn’t stop us from having a share of the awesome health benefits of apple.

Apple is essentially rich in antioxidant (some disease fighting compounds) which is due to substances like catechin, procyanidins, chlorogenic acid, ploridizin and many more which are present in the skin of the apple.

Apart from being an antioxidant, apple is also rich in flavonoid and dietetic fibres which aids digestion and bowel movement.

The Awesome Health Benefits of Apples

Health benefits of apples

Eating a full apple is proven to be more beneficial than making the juice extract. This will direct all the health benefits into your body wholly without any alteration. Apple is associated with numerous health benefits which will be pointed out here.

Eating apples is known to decrease the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, cardiac diseases and diabetes. Below listed health benefits of apples are backed up by proper researches.

1. Apples for Weight Loss

Apples for weight loss

With an apple, you no longer have to fast, starve yourself or run miles away in order to lose weight. This precious fruit is rich in fibre which is highly recommended by doctors for good health.

A lot of research has pointed to the ability of apple to help in weight loss thereby reducing obesity, one of such is found in the research performed by some researchers in Harvard University. They found out that intake of foods rich in flavonols, flavan-3-ols, anthocyanins and flavonoids, all of which are present in our precious apples were associated with less weight gain among adults of age 27-65 and may contribute to the prevention of obesity and its potential consequences.

So you can agree that an apple a day, keeps you away from the gym!

2. Apples for a Healthy Heart

Research has shown that diets with the highest total dietary fibre and non soluble dietary fibre intakes were associated with a significantly lower risk of several heart disease risk factors, including overweight, elevated waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.

Luckily, apple is one of those fruits which is sufficiently rich in fibre and also has the ability to reduce the risk of heart disease thereby bringing a drop to mortality rate due to cardiac diseases.

3. Blood Pressure

Facilitating weight loss, heart health, strong immunity and other benefits, apple extract are also known through laboratory research to have the ability of inhibiting Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) which is a main target in controlling high blood pressure.

4. Cancer

Apples have been proven to possess some anti-cancer effect. Eating just one apple a day could slash the risk of colorectal cancer by more than one third. Researchers in Poland surveyed 592 people with colorectal cancer and 700 cancer-free individuals about their diet and lifestyle. Cancer-free individuals tended to eat more apples than those with cancer and the more apples per day that an individual ate the less likely they were to develop colorectal cancer.

They also found that the anti-cancer effect was seen even when an individual had a low total consumption of fruits and vegetables but consumed at least an apple a day. The observed protective effect may result from apples rich content of flavonoid and other polyphenols, which can inhibit cancer onset and cell proliferation. In addition, apples are a good source of fibre and a high-fibre diet is known as a risk reducer for colorectal cancer.

Generally, apples can reduce the risk of having breast, pancreatic, liver, colon, prostrate and bowel cancer. So, an apple a day keeps cancer far away from you!

5. Better Gut Health

Researchers from the University of Denmark have discovered that apples and apple products could give the health of your intestines as well as your immune system a boost – by increasing the numbers of good gut bacteria.

When scientists fed rats a diet of apples in all its forms including juice, applesauce, and the whole fruit, the rats developed larger numbers of good gut bacteria. Researchers believe it is due to the pectin the apple contains.

Pectin is a fibre-like substance found in the cell walls of plants, and is often packaged and used as a gelling agent for people who make their own homemade jams and jellies. Apples are a natural source of this fibre-like material.

The friendly bacteria in the intestines like to feed on apple pectin which allows them to replicate and thrive while doing their good disease fighting deeds in the intestines.

6. Boost Your Immunity

Soluble fibre, like pectin from apples, may reduce the inflammation associated with obesity-related diseases and strengthen the immune system, according to a study from the University of Illinois.

Lab animals fed a low-fat diet with either soluble or insoluble fibre showed distinctly different responses when their immune system was challenged, with the soluble-fibre-fed animals displaying the less sickness and a faster recovery rate than the other animals.

7. A Better Lungs Health

Apples can help contribute to a better lung health, preventing asthma, chronic coughs and lung cancer. Research from the UK reports that children of mothers who eat apples during pregnancy are less likely to exhibit symptoms of asthma, including wheezing, at age 5.

Among a variety of foods consumed and recorded by the pregnant women, apples were the only food found to have a positive association with a reduced risk of asthma. Also, a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that foods rich in fibre and flavonoids — found abundantly in apples — may reduce chronic productive cough and other respiratory symptoms.

Researchers at the University of Hawaii and Finland’s National Public Health Institute have also linked flavonoids found in apples with a reduced risk of developing certain cancers, including lung cancer.

8. Anti-oxidants

A USDA study showed that all apples contain beneficial levels of antioxidants and have other healthful nutrition properties. Two-thirds of an apple’s antioxidants are found in its peel.

9. Brain Health

A growing body of evidence from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell suggests that eating apples and drinking apple juice can be beneficial when it comes to improving brain health and diminishing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

In conjunction with a balanced diet, apple and apple juice consumption may protect against oxidative brain damage that can lead to memory loss. The brain health benefits were found when animals consumed the equivalent of 2-3 cups of apple juice or 2-4 whole apples per day.

A clinical trial showed that drinking apple juice significantly improved mood and behavior among a group of patients diagnosed with moderate-to-severe Alzheimer’s disease.

10. Neurodegenerative Diseases

Researchers from Cornell University also found in their in vitro study that apple nutrients protected brain neurons against oxidative damage. Such damage can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The study highlighted a particular apple flavonoid, quercetin, as a principal compound responsible for the protective effect.

Conclusion: from the above sited researches and studies, it can be seen that taking apples or making juices out of it do have some health benefits. To make the consumption of apples more enjoyable, you can try out some apple recipes like vegetable and fruit salads.

Nasal Injuries in Children: Causes and Preventive Measures to Be Taken

nasal injuries in kids

Nasal injuries do not happen deliberately among kids. Sometimes, they get to practice what they saw somewhere (TV) or what they saw other kids do.

Injuries to the nose are common, and all too often, the delicate nasal bones are fractured. This may displace the septum to one side or the other, and perhaps change the whole expression of the face.

It may also interfere with the normal passage of air through the nose. Whenever possible, the bones should be replaced in their normal position, so that the nasal septum will heal and the nose will appear straight.

It is not possible for parents to keep an eye on their kids for 24 hours because they also have needs to meet. During this short period in which you’ve taken your attention off your kid, strange things can happen.

Children often insert various objects into their nose, such as pebbles, peanuts, beans, small toys and many other things.

These may not be noted for a while, and then later the child may complain of pain, sneezing and foul discharge.

Young children are sometimes troubled with insects gaining entrance to the nose, causing distressing symptoms; just like what happened to the 7 year old James who nearly ripped off his nose in the process of removing an insect that gained entrance into his nose.

If the foreign body can be readily removed by the use of forceps, tweezers or suction, by all means- remove it.

If the object is too firmly embedded, take the child to a hospital emergency room or to your family physician for expert care.

happy kids

Some Causes of Nasal Injuries

Nasal injuries are not diseases; they are not caused by germs or any other micro-organisms but are mainly due to some act of experimentation by left-alone kids.

A child left alone with a sachet of peanut may try experimenting what it would feel like to have the peanut pass through the nose rather than the mouth.

Also, a child left alone in a yard with trips of gravels and pebbles may accidentally get one into the nose or maybe deliberately because they have no idea what they are actually doing.

Apart from nasal injuries, it is also wise to keep kids away from such places which are prone to general injuries because they might also injure other parts of the body.

Preventive Measures to Be Taken By Parents In Order to Avoid Nasal Injuries in Kids

1. Watch the toys you buy: some tiny toys which can easily pass through the nose should not be given to kids. Also, toys like apple, mango, pea or any other fruit-mimicked toys shouldn’t be given to kids.

This is because, they might assume that it’s just the normal apple, orange etc which you do get for them and with that, they might either swallow them or chew them off bit by bit.

2. Don’t let them watch movies with contents that can trigger or resolve to them committing nasal injuries. Movies which involves magic; like those in which a man will put an insect or any object into the nose and then brings out other objects like fruits, money and other funny stuffs should be hidden from kids.

They might want to try and see if they can also perform the same magic within the slightest minute you leave them alone

3. Don’t let them play in places with small objects which can easily pass through the nose. Places with pebbles, tiny gravels, spilled beans and peanuts may produce an epic scene in which you will have to run around looking for who can help get the stuffed object out of your kid’s nose.

educate kids

4. Educate your kids on the dangers of trying to insert an object into their nose. These might help atimes but it’s always better if the warning comes with a little scary story relating to the issue at hand.

A child who hears a little scary story about another child who inserted an object into his nose will be afraid of doing so. In this way, you can have a peace of mind.

5. If possible, don’t leave your kid alone. You can get your child admitted into a daycare (crèche) center where proper care will be taken of him or her until you are back from work.

Applying this method will also help reduce the chances of any other physical injury occurring.

6. Discourage other kids you find trying to insert an object into the nose: it does not have to be your own child before you warn him or her that what he/she is trying to do is wrong.

You never can tell and chances are, this same kid might introduce the act to your own kid so it’s best if you yell at the first instance in order to avoid tears and worries later.

Top 10 DIY Home Remedies for Getting Rid Of Acne or Pimples Fast

Acne remedies

Are you getting frustrated by that circle-like red spot sitting on your nose or maybe somewhere around your face, neck, back or shoulders? I know that feeling because I personally experienced it too and 90% of teenagers do experience it.

Pimples are very common in young people during their teen years. This condition, which is also known as acne, is apparently due to certain hormonal changes within the body though some research has been able to link it to other causes like stress, genetics, diet etc. It is particularly prevalent during early adolescence, from twelve to sixteen years of age, and is more likely to occur in those who have oily skin.

In the early stages, a blackhead or comedone blocks the outlet of an oil gland within the skin. This is not a serious problem since it does not leave any permanent effect. If the sebaceous duct ruptures and the oily material oozes out between the layers of the skin instead of coming to the surface, there may be a cyst or swelling known as sebaceous cyst.

These are somewhat disfiguring but not harmful unless they become infected and form small abscesses. When these heal, they may leave ugly scars. Severe acne may occur over the shoulders, the back and chest, as well as the face and neck. Sometimes, it may spread into the pinna of your ear. Top 10 DIY Home Remedies to Relief Headache

man with headache

Suffering in the infuriating hands of a hard pounding headache is what no one would love to have happen to them. Eddie shared his own experience on headache with me and it goes as follows. Being a long time victim of frequent headaches which not only punished me by itself but rather they came in full squad accompanied by severe stomach ache and eye pains.

Surviving through those periods which I had headaches, stomach and eye pains was hell for me despite the sympathy showered on me by my loved ones throughout my miserable periods. I’m not a fan of swallowing smelly tablets and capsules so I kept rejecting any medicine given to me.

With a scary threat from daddy and mummy, I had to see a doctor who did his work perfectly by dosing out bottles of antacid and tons of tablets. I took on those medications for some time and they happened to work for few periods, slowly relieving the pains and putting me to unexpected sleep.

I resolved to the use of natural home remedies for headaches and stomach pains. I later discovered that one way of freeing myself from the hands of those pain crews was by throwing up (Vomiting). It worked for me every time it happened. I couldn’t figure out what connection the stomach ache, eye pains and headache had with each other but one thing was sure-they don’t inflict me singly; they always work together, so you can imagine what I had to go through.

The tip shared under this sub topic is specifically the one which worked for Eddie. If you find yourself in a situation similar to my own sympathetic experience, maybe you can try it too and hopefully it might work for you. What I did each time I experienced headache, stomach pains and eye pains all of them featuring at the same time on the same body was forcing myself to throw up. Naturally, the nausea won’t come by itself; I used to force myself to make it happen. Once I have thrown up, I would then lie with my tummy on a tiled floor (because of the coolness) for few minutes. Once I have done that, for sure the pain always reduce and I will then come back to life. It’s really mysterious how it worked each time I apply that.

Aside from the above tip, I will also share with you a compiled list of Natural Home remedies you can apply to wave off your own bout of headache.

Here goes the long list of natural, non-toxic helpful home remedies for the hard pounding headaches, choose whichever one you like and get rolling.

Alternatively, you can also crush the ginger root and insert it into hot water or boil it altogether, followed by filtration and sipping. However way you go, it will always bring some relieve to your headache.

cayenne pepper

2. Where is your Cayenne Pepper?

According to an article from the University of Michigan on the health benefits of cayenne pepper, it is stated that cayenne pepper contains a substance called Capsaicin. Substance P is a nerve chemical involved in pain transmission and it contributes to your headache. This is because if your body is absent from pains, then you wouldn’t have any reason to complain of headache.

So, what connection does this capsaicin in cayenne pepper and the substance P in your nerves have? The answer is; the capsaicin in cayenne pepper has the ability to reduce the levels of substance P in the nerves thereby reducing the pains you feel.

Apply this cinnamon paste unto your forehead and temples. Lay down for some time (30 minutes will be cool!), after which you can wash it off with lukewarm water.

9. Hot and cold compress

Headaches caused by expanded blood vessel pressing on nerves can be dealt with by applying something cold to the area to constrict those vessels and relieve some of the pressure causing the throbbing ache while headaches caused by tension/anxiety and cold tends to tighten up muscles that then pinch nerves and enlarge blood vessels. Either way, the use of either cold or warm compress has an alleviating effect.

Cold compress in the form of a bag of ice or a cold pack and hot compress in the form of a towel soaked in very warm water, applied over the forehead, temples and back of the neck or anywhere the pain seems to concentrate, can help give a relief. You can either use cold or warm compress. Also, try sipping fresh water. It helps.
